The Truth About Layers and Pillowtop Mattresses
The Truth About Layers and Pillowtop Mattresses

The pillowtop is a 2” to 4” comfort layer made of a softer density than the core layer of the mattress. Over time, these softer, thinner layers can break down sooner, and become vulnerable to sagging, as well as a surface that’s too soft.

However, additional layers of softness can enhance your sleeping experience, especially if you are thin, curvy or getting older. So a pillowtop can be a perfect choice for many people... you just need to know what it's made of. We've all heard the stories (maybe even from personal experience) about sagging into the middle of the mattress, etc. This is very common with chemical foam mattresses, as they break down very easily and can also cause very deep body impressions. If you prefer a softer mattress, try to get a pillowtop made from natural latex.

Latex rubber holds its shape and durability much longer and with more resilience than synthetic foam. Because of this quality, Latex Rubber does not need to be flipped... an occassional head-to-toe rotation will do. All of our natural latex rubber mattresses feature a solid 7" dunlop core for support and durability. Be careful with layered beds that you choose your own firmness density -- most are comprised of only small two-inch latex toppers. This type of bed construction can create the “hammock” effect if all the layers are soft (dipping and sinking in the middle of your body), because there is no solid core as a foundation, which is needed for overall body support. With CozyPure® you always get a thick, solid supportive core necessary for mattress longevity, with options of softer natural latex toppers above the core. If you do purchase a layered bed, be sure to get firm or medium firm layers at the base.

A mattress is a serious investment, and we want you to be happy with your organic bed, and provide you with many years of blissful sleep. Our job is to do it better than anyone else in the business. Your job is to enjoy it.
Rethinking the Layered Bed....

Layered beds that are made from sheets of latex are becoming increasingly popular, however they don't really provide a "core" as a support layer. They are more like stacked futon components with a snug cover to encase them together. Two 3" layers (or three 2" layers) is equal to a solid 6" core. The six-inch core will provide more strength, support and long-term durability which is essential in building a great bed. Start with a good core and then if necessary, add a softer comfort layer on top. Read Inside a Mattress to learn about the necessary components needed to construct a bed. Of course, the layered bed is a popular choice because of the novelty to create a unique sleep system. If you decide on layers, be sure the latex is top-quality (from a world-leading manufacturer) to assure durability, and try to get the latex sheets in at least 3" thickness.
