Superior comfort and support - from a tree!
CozyPure natural latex rubber is harvested by tapping the milk of the Hevea Brasiliensis, otherwise known as the rubber tree. The trees grow in Malaysian plantations especially selected for their high-quality production. In our process to create a latex rubber bed, an injection system produces the purest natural product for mattress cores that will keep their shape. Once the solid rubber is made with this method, we're left with a mattress core that's supportive, yet soft in the areas we need, like shoulders and hips.
Making the rubber. This is where it gets confusing with the different methods, and various mixing agents. Make sure you find out when and what is going into the rubber sap to create the solid material, such as fillers or clay. The process itself is similar to baking a cake. Think of the rubber in its "raw" form as cake batter. Next you need to add oil or butter and usually an egg, to give it texture, consistency, and flavor. Our mixing ingredients are air, natural soap and vulcanization agents such as soda ash and zinc. The mixing ingredients are essential to "whip" the rubber into a frothy mixture to create a substantial and even-textured "batter". This batter is then poured into a sheet-mold with hollow pins (think of a bunt cake pan), then baked in an oven so the high heat bonds and "cooks" the ingredients. We hope our "cake-baking" analogy helps you understand the "mixing" process of rubber.
"Blended" Natural Rubber. Unfortunately the marketplace is filled with imitations that are subjected to inferior processes or blended with large amounts of clay "fillers". If you read about the "mixing" process above, then you know the "raw sap" rubber must be blended with something to bond it for consistency. Some manufacturers add synthetic (man-made) rubber at this stage as the main component for the mattress. Some "natural latex rubber" mattresses are actually remnants glued together then wrapped inside the upholstery; others have reinforced edging made from synthetic foam materials. These "imitation" rubber mattresses usually break down faster than natural rubber. If the price seems too good to be true - it probably is. Take your time, do your homework, ask questions and be sure you know what you're getting.
Now the good stuff -- lets look at benefits.
The Hevea milk contains an antibacterial substance that is a natural dust-mite repellent. The rubber also exhibits superior durability and elasticity (for longevity), retention of shape and firmness (for even support) and flexibility combined with stability (for continuous sleep comfort). Excellent heat and moisture regulation, as well as superior air circulation (for preventing the growth of molds and mildew) makes our natural rubber mattresses a smart choice for allergy sufferers. Incorporating a rubber core mattress into your sleep environment provides a good night's rest that's not only comfortable, but also healthy. Now, we'll address each benefit in more detail:
Naturally Dust Mite Resistant. As stated above, this wonderful benefit is derived from the milk in the rubber tree (the more "natural" the end product - the better this benefit will be). Because the milk contains a natural antibacterial agent that repels dust mites, those same properties are incorporated into the mattress itself. Dust mites do not like rubber! This is very good news for people with allergies to dust mites, so be sure to get a product containing a high-percentage of "natural" rubber in its most pure form to take advantage of this benefit.
Durability. Natural rubber mattresses were very popular in the sixties, before the heavy implementation of synthetic foams (foams offered more profits for the big brand manufacturers). There are people who are only now getting new rubber mattresses, because the one they purchased forty years ago is starting to slowly break down. 40 years! We're certainly not stating that our mattresses will last that long (although it is definitely possible). So much is based on the use and abuse -- but natural rubber mattresses have a much higher-than-normal life-span compared to the foam-and-dacron counterpart. This stuff is made to last.
Comfort. What's an organic sleep system without comfort? An organic mattress can be made from the best natural materials in the world, but if it's not comfortable, then you're not going to get a good night's sleep. Obviously, experienced craftsmen play a vital role in producing high-quality construction, but you still need to layer the proper materials to create an organic bed for comfort. Natural rubber is superior as the most durable cushioning component available today. It provides exceptional contouring using "dynamic" body impressions (unlike plastic-derived memory foam which HOLDS the impression for some time, often making the bed feel lumpy). There are no springs to counteract resistance, allowing your pressure point areas more cushion where it's needed. At the same time, the high density of natural rubber provides excellent support and proper spinal alignment for the other areas that don't need the "push and cush" benefits. Because it responds to one's individual body, it's perfect for almost anyone! If you share your bed with a partner, a natural rubber mattress offers less "transfer of motion"... meaning you won't feel him or her moving around so much. And that's more sleep for you. Rubber supports you in cushioned comfort for the best rest.
Molds and Mildew Resistant. Natural rubber helps regulate heat and moisture through its air circulation construction. The rubber sheets contain cells with thousands and thousands of little inner-connected air pockets which provide ventilation within the mattress and assist in thermal balance. Natural rubber is also well known for being hypoallergenic having antibacterial and anti-fungal properties. The benefits of circulation, as well as natural resistance to fungi and bacteria allow for a hygienic mattress that's not conducive towards the growth of molds and mildews. Even if you don't have allergens, isn't it nice to know you're sleeping on such a "clean" bed?
Odds and Ends. Natural "latex" rubber is a mixture of compounds borne in special structures called laticifers. The composition differs in different species, but typically contains water, terpenes, sugars, enzymes, etc. The Aztecs of Mexico played catch with balls made from rubber of Castilla elastica. In the Amazon, Indians waterproofed clothing by coating it with latex of Hevea brasiliensis. Until the 1980's, rubber was extracted mostly from wild trees of Hevea brasiliensis. The latex was collected (often in leaves) by diagonally slashing the trees. Once collected, it was filtered, mixed with water and slowly poured over a paddle that was held over a smoky fire. A ball of coagulated latex was eventually prepared. Rubber is still prepared in Brazil in this manner. Today, however, dilute acetic or formic acid is often added to coagulate the rubber. About 7 x 109 lbs of rubber/per year is used in the United States alone. Only abbout 30% of this is natural rubber. The other 70% is synthetic rubber, made from petroleum derivatives, which is a problem for the future.
